BAHS Message Board - Welcome & Announcements

BAHS Message Board: BAHS Message Board - Welcome & Announcements
Welcome to the BAHS Message Board. We hope this generally furthers exchange between all of us. Thanks go to Steve Snyder '80 for suggesting we migrate things over to the "Discus" software package.

How to use this beast should be straightforward, but one suggestion: use the links under the "Discussion" menu item on the left margin to quicly see where new messages have been added. You can immediately see a list of all new messages within the last day, or week, with one simple click.

Please let me know about any ideas you have for main topics that you would like added, and post a message about it in the appropriate spot so that other people can add their two cents. If people like the idea, then its probably a topic that should be added.

This is new software for me as well as you, and while I have mastered the basics, undoubtedly there are new things that will take me a bit of time to figure out. Please bear with me. That said, if there are any problems, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me (norman@ucsd.edu). If there is a delay between when you send me your message, and when I reply, or act, its probably because I am (1) busy earning my living, (2) out of town, (3) working on it, (4) something else.

Finally, I am merely your humble servent trying to make it possible for y'all to interact. I don't make policy, I don't make decisions, I don't do much but handle the technical side of things. Policy is decided by the Alumni Board. Please contact them (email addresses are on the main BAHS website page) if your question is anything other than technical.

I look forward to seeing your posts on the new board.

P.S.: Currently all the conversations here are "public" and anyone can read and post messages. So there is no need to have an "account" etc. This arrangement worked well with the previous message board, and there seems no reason to change this. So, for now, simply post and read as you would like, and pay no heed to requests for passwords, account names, etc. - Nn.

Maureen Clyne will be incommunicado until 20 August. She asked me to post that she would be on vacation until 20 August, and won't be able to answer emails, phone calls etc, until she returns.

I am adding to this the fact that it is most certainly a well deserved break from running the BAHSAA, and I hope she is able to return this late August, with her batteries fully recharged.

Just put in change of DNS for the BAHS.ORG domain to bring things over to the new server. It will take a few days for the DNS change to propogate throughout the world's DNS servers, but eventually it will.

During that time, some of you will see the new web server, some of you will see the old one. Not a big deal, except that it means there are two versions of the Message Board, one appearing on each of the servers. It is possible that some messages will "slip through the cracks" but I will try to make sure that eventually they all make it over to the new server.

There may be some other quirks that you will notice until things settle down. I have to admit that I have not planned this "move" as carefully as I would if this was something like ibm.com, but within a week everything should settle down.

Please sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Have a good weekend,

bahs.org DNS change now fully authorized - so over the next few days, everyone will start to be automatically shifted to the new server. Once things have shifted sufficiently, I will move the message board, photo archive, and online email directory to the new server. This will avoid any lost messages/updates to any of these.

If you want to see if you are reaching the new server you'll need to point your browser to http://www.bahs.org/ or simply click here.

Most everything should have stabilized by the end of the week. Then we'll have a whole new world of possibilities open up for the website.

Best wishes,

www.bahs.org is now fully up and running. It was a bit tricky with the message board, and I am not sure it is running completely correctly. But lets give it a try and see. In the very worst case we'll just reinstall the beast, and start anew. Hope that won't happen however!

If any of you run into error messages, please let me know the URL/web-address associated with the error, and I will try to figure out what is going on.

Thanks for your patience,

We're moving www.bahs.org to a new server. I won't go into all the reasons, and details, but I hope that none of this will be noticable - but it might be. Everything should be completed by 1 February. Costs will continue to remain small enough for me to absorb them.

What about an FAQ? Would anyone out there like to put together a list of "frequently asked questions" and their answers? As I read through things on the message board, I see lots of things that are of general interest that it would be nice to have in one central place. Things such as "Where did Clarence come from?" When was Plittersdorf built? etc. If there is interest, I will make a new conversation on the message board where people can share questions and answers which they think should be in an FAQ.

Steve Snyder will be "taking care of the shop" (ie the Message Board) during the two week period 19 May - 03 June. If you need to get in touch with him, his email address is stevesn@microsoft.com

Thanks Steve,

"Top (News) Stories" have been added to the left margin now. I hope it doesn't make the Message Board look to "busy". If it does, I'll remove it to some other location. Thought I'd give it a try for a bit and see how people like it.

Your comments welcome!
